Wie aber soll eine Währungsunion funktionieren, deren politisches Fundament
das durch sie bedingte Gewicht des Binnenmarktes augenscheinlich nicht
tragen kann? Diese Frage ist bisher in vielen Bereichen ein Tabu geblieben. Wer
die Funktionsfähigkeit der Währungsunion bemängelte, dem wurde entgegnet,
er stelle damit den Euro infrage und darüber hinaus auch die europäische Einigung
an sich. Solche Pauschalisierungen sind falsch. Vielmehr greift eine umgekehrte
Logik: Wer die Probleme der Währungsunion nicht erkennen will, der
riskiert letztlich, die Legitimität des Euro aufs Spiel zu setzen (vgl. Enderlein
2006b). Denn leider achten ökonomische Zusammenhänge herzlich wenig auf
die political correctness der Problemquellen. Und so sollte auch die Angst vor einer
euroskeptischen Polemik die nüchterne Analyse nicht stoppen.
