Safe enclosure strategies have to be considered on a plant-by-plant basis. The<br />

design of the enclosure barriers, the duration of the enclosure period and the<br />

application of a passive or active regime may vary from plant to plant.<br />

≫ CRITICAL TASKS OF SAFE ENCLOSURE ≫<br />

A number of critical tasks will be performed prior to and dur<strong>in</strong>g the safe enclosure period.<br />

These tasks will vary accord<strong>in</strong>g to the type of facility <strong>in</strong>volved and the amount of<br />

radioactive material rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the facility. Each of these tasks is properly considered<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the plann<strong>in</strong>g process and each is <strong>in</strong>corporated, as applicable, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

decommission<strong>in</strong>g plan and <strong>in</strong> other complementary documents.<br />

These tasks <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

Characterization of the Installation<br />

Waste Management Plan<br />

Upgrade or Shutdown of Installations of Systems Control of Areas<br />

Information Management<br />

Surveillance and Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />

Activities dur<strong>in</strong>g Safe Enclosure<br />

≫ DECONTAMINATION ≫<br />

The term decontam<strong>in</strong>ation covers the broad range of activities directed to the removal or<br />

reduction of radioactive contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> or on materials, structures and equipment at a<br />

nuclear <strong>in</strong>stallation. Decommission<strong>in</strong>g of a reactor may be aided at certa<strong>in</strong> stages by<br />
