3.1. IAEA’S SAFETY STANDARDS PROGRAMME<br />

3.1.1. Development of IAEA nuclear safety requirements and guides<br />

The development of nuclear and radiation safety standards is a statutory function unique<br />

to the IAEA <strong>in</strong> the United Nations system. The IAEA Statute expressly authorizes the<br />

Agency “to establish standards of safety” and “to provide for the application of these<br />

standards”. Over the years, more than 200 safety standards have been published <strong>in</strong> the<br />

IAEA Safety Series. Prior to 1996, safety standard publications were separated by<br />

subject matter <strong>in</strong>to the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

The Nuclear Safety Standards (NUSS);<br />

The International <strong>Basic</strong> Safety Standards for Protection Aga<strong>in</strong>st Ioniz<strong>in</strong>g Radiation<br />

and for the Safety of Radiation Sources (the <strong>Basic</strong> Safety Standards), with
