between the different phases of the corium, for example between the metallic (Zr, Cr, Fe,<br />

Ni) and oxide (UO2, ZrO2, Fe2O3...) phases. The gases released by the concrete pass<br />

through the corium and oxidize the metals. This results <strong>in</strong> a release of hydrogen and<br />

carbon monoxide towards the conta<strong>in</strong>ment, which could participate <strong>in</strong> combustion <strong>in</strong> the<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ment atmosphere. [6]<br />

As Fig. 16.4.8 shows, this process <strong>in</strong>volves the decomposition of concrete from core<br />

debris and can challenge the conta<strong>in</strong>ment by various mechanisms, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

(a) Pressurization as a result of the production of steam and noncondensable gases to<br />

the po<strong>in</strong>t of conta<strong>in</strong>ment rupture;
