6.1. SAFETY CLASSIFICATION IN IAEA SAFETY<br />

STANDARDS<br />

At Chapter 5. Requirements for Plant Design <strong>in</strong> Safety Requirements “Safety of Nuclear<br />

Power Plants; Design” (IAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS‐R‐1)[6.1], SAFETY<br />

CLASSIFICATION is def<strong>in</strong>ed as follows;<br />

All structures, systems and components, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g software for <strong>in</strong>strumentation classified<br />

on the basis of their function and significance with regard to safety. They shall be<br />

designed, constructed and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed such that their quality and reliability is<br />

commensurate with this classification.<br />

The method for classify<strong>in</strong>g the safety significance of a structure, system or component<br />

shall primarily be based on determ<strong>in</strong>istic methods, complemented where appropriate by<br />

probabilistic methods and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g judgment, with account taken of factors such as:<br />

(1) the safety function(s) to be performed by the item;<br />
