There should be no chance of accidents lead<strong>in</strong>g to releases <strong>in</strong> excess of those approved<br />

for clearance. The criteria (a) and (b) apply to all <strong>in</strong>dividuals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g workers, who are<br />

considered <strong>in</strong> these cases as members of the public. The <strong>Korea</strong>n AEA also def<strong>in</strong>es the<br />

clearance level adopted from the “exempt waste” concept of the IAEA radioactive waste<br />

classification. The clearance levels <strong>in</strong> <strong>Korea</strong> such that annual <strong>in</strong>dividual dose shall be<br />

below 10 μSv/y, and the total collective dose be below 1 person‐Sv/y concurrently. These<br />

are identical to the levels specified <strong>in</strong> IAEA Safety Series No. 115 (1996).<br />

20.2.3. Application of the system of clearance<br />

In operational work, it is not practical to use the clearance criteria <strong>in</strong> terms of doses.<br />

Therefore the regulatory authority should develop derived radionuclide or nuclide group<br />

specific clearance levels <strong>in</strong> terms of activity concentrations or activity. Although the<br />

radiological criteria of clearance are similar to the exemption criteria, derived clearance<br />
