2.6. Radiation Carc<strong>in</strong>ogenesis<br />

The date set which are used as the bases of radiation protection come from a variety of<br />

sources [9], [11]. Some of these are:<br />

the study of disease and mortality rates of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic<br />

bomb survivors,<br />

the survival rates of patients who had suffered from ankylos<strong>in</strong>g spondylitis,<br />

tuberculosis patients given chest fluoroscopies,<br />

irradiation of children for r<strong>in</strong>gworm of the scalp,<br />

the national registers of radiation workers.<br />

In many of these cases, the greatest difficulty <strong>in</strong> associat<strong>in</strong>g the pathological condition<br />

with the radiation exposure lies <strong>in</strong> the precision of the dosimetry. The data therefore have<br />

to be complemented by controlled radiation biology experiments on both cellular and<br />

mammalian systems.<br />

2.6.1. Dose : response relationships<br />

The mechanisms of radiation action are a cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g area of study. Many factors are<br />

responsible for the large uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty between the exposure to radiation and the ensu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

biological response. This is especially true at the low doses experienced under radiation<br />
