<strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Basic</strong> <strong>Professional</strong> <strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Course</strong> (BPTC) on Nuclear Safety<br />

The shift staffs <strong>in</strong>vestigate apparent abnormalities and malfunctions and report<br />

unexpla<strong>in</strong>ed events to their supervisors. Persons work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> safety related areas strictly<br />

follow requirements, such as those relat<strong>in</strong>g to weld<strong>in</strong>g, helmets, safety gear, protective<br />

cloth<strong>in</strong>g, radiation work permits, etc. Independent verification is applied as appropriate to<br />

activities important to safety.<br />

Status report<strong>in</strong>g and record<strong>in</strong>g systems function well and operator verification is frequent<br />

and effective. Shift crew checks on the condition of systems and components by<br />

observation, logg<strong>in</strong>g, analysis of data and any test<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> their responsibility. In<br />

particular:<br />

System and component status changes are appropriately documented and<br />

communicated from local control stations to the ma<strong>in</strong> control room <strong>in</strong> a timely<br />

manner.<br />

Activities affect<strong>in</strong>g the status of systems and components important to safety are<br />

planned, known to the shift supervisor, and authorized by the shift supervisor or the<br />

shift supervisor's delegate.<br />

The operat<strong>in</strong>g condition of systems and components is effectively monitored and<br />

reviewed and appropriate actions <strong>in</strong>itiated when needed:<br />

− Checklists or other comparable means are used to ensure that necessary safety<br />

equipment is operable and that the proper conditions are met for each mode<br />

of operation.<br />

− Log keep<strong>in</strong>g is timely and accurate and adequately reflect plant activities and<br />

status.<br />

− Operator field checks are sufficient to monitor the local status of safety<br />

equipment.<br />

− A surveillance test program is properly executed to ensure that safety equipment<br />

is verified to be operable through test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
