In order to secure stable resources for decommission<strong>in</strong>g, the NPP operators have now<br />

been accumulat<strong>in</strong>g expenses for every stage of decommission<strong>in</strong>g and the safe<br />

management of decommissioned waste, <strong>in</strong> accordance with the Electricity Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Act(EBA).<br />

19.4.2. The Status of the Decommission<strong>in</strong>g Facilities<br />

The facilities, which are be<strong>in</strong>g decommissioned as of December 31, 2004, are the <strong>Korea</strong>n<br />

Research Reactor units 1 and 2 (KRR-1 and 2) and the Uranium Conversion Facility. The<br />

research reactors are located <strong>in</strong> Seoul and the uranium conversion facility <strong>in</strong> Daejeon.<br />

Their characteristics are shown <strong>in</strong> Table 2.<br />

The first research reactor KRR-1 reached its first criticality <strong>in</strong> March 1962 and shut down<br />

<strong>in</strong> January 1995. The operation of the KRR-2 started <strong>in</strong> May 1972 and it had been<br />

operated for 55226 hours through December 1995 with a total thermal output of 68740<br />

MWth. A project for the decommission<strong>in</strong>g of KRR-1 and 2 was launched from January<br />

1997, with the goal of the completion of the decommission<strong>in</strong>g at the end of 2008.
