6. Safety Classification Of Structures, Systems and Components<br />

the equipment for which operat<strong>in</strong>g errors could result <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>advertent radioactive<br />

releases;<br />

the safety systems and equipment necessary, particularly <strong>in</strong> the case of an <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />

or external hazards (fire, flood<strong>in</strong>g, explosion etc.) or dur<strong>in</strong>g unit shutdown phases;<br />

handl<strong>in</strong>g systems and equipment liable to harm spent fuel assemblies <strong>in</strong> the event<br />

of a load be<strong>in</strong>g dropped as well as, more generally, equipment liable to damage<br />

seismic safety grade equipment <strong>in</strong> the event of their collapse dur<strong>in</strong>g an earthquake;<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> equipment that is useful but not <strong>in</strong>dispensable <strong>in</strong> post‐accident operation;<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> items of equipment necessary for resupply<strong>in</strong>g the auxiliary feed water tank;<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> items of equipment which are only <strong>in</strong>dispensable <strong>in</strong> the long term<br />

(particularly that used <strong>in</strong> the procedures associated with complementary operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

conditions) and those used for raw water system make‐up <strong>in</strong> operation <strong>in</strong> the<br />

closed circuit mode;<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> mobile equipment used under complementary operat<strong>in</strong>g conditions;<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> items of special equipment necessary for manag<strong>in</strong>g severe accidents.<br />

The requirements for this equipment shall be specified on a case‐by‐case basis <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

ensure a high degree of availability of the equipment. As a m<strong>in</strong>imum, <strong>in</strong>‐service periodic<br />

<strong>in</strong>spections must be possible (except <strong>in</strong> the event of damage follow<strong>in</strong>g an earthquake) and<br />

the quality assurance must be applied.<br />
