biennial : <strong>in</strong>terval not to exceed 2,5 years;<br />

annual : <strong>in</strong>terval not to exceed 15 months;<br />

semiannual : <strong>in</strong>terval not to exceed 7.5 months;<br />

quarterly : <strong>in</strong>terval not to exceed 4 months;<br />

monthly : <strong>in</strong>terval not to exceed 6 weeks;<br />

weekly : <strong>in</strong>terval not to exceed 10 days;<br />

daily : must be done dur<strong>in</strong>g the calendar day;<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a shift―must be done dur<strong>in</strong>g a reactor shift;<br />

For each surveillance requirement (SR), it should be specified if the surveillance activity<br />

can or cannot be deferred dur<strong>in</strong>g reactor shutdown. It should also be specified for those<br />

that can be deferred, which must be performed prior to reactor operations. Further, the<br />

technical specification SRs must specify which activities can only be performed with<br />

scheduled surveillances that will become due dur<strong>in</strong>g planned periods of operation and<br />

should be performed before the operational period. Periodic surveillance activities should<br />

be done before ma<strong>in</strong>tenance is performed.<br />

Appropriate surveillance test<strong>in</strong>g on any technical specification required system shall be<br />

conducted after replacement, repair, or modification before the system is considered<br />

operable and returned to service. In general, three types of SRs are specified: operability<br />

checks, calibrations, and <strong>in</strong>spections. Depend<strong>in</strong>g on the facility and system, operability<br />

checks shall be established from monthly to quarterly; calibrations and <strong>in</strong>spections shall<br />

be established from annually to biennially. The follow<strong>in</strong>g are recommended maximum<br />

SRs for systems specified <strong>in</strong> Sec. 3, “Limit<strong>in</strong>g conditions for operations.” Acceptance<br />

criteria shall be stated where applicable. Allowable surveillance <strong>in</strong>tervals and deferrals<br />

should be stated <strong>in</strong> the technical specifications<br />
