6. Safety Classification Of Structures, Systems and Components<br />

6.5. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT CLASSIFICATION<br />

6.5.1. Class 1E<br />

Class 1E shall apply to the <strong>in</strong>strumentation channel electrical equipment from the sensors<br />

and transmitters up to and <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the actuators, as well as associated power supplies.<br />

Under certa<strong>in</strong> conditions, the I&C for these channels may be classified <strong>in</strong>to Non Class IE.<br />

Class 1E shall thus <strong>in</strong>clude: electrical power supplies; motors; valve operators; solenoid<br />

valves; on‐site power distribution networks; <strong>in</strong>strumentation.<br />

6.5.1.1. Def<strong>in</strong>ition of class 1E<br />

Class 1E covers systems and equipment perform<strong>in</strong>g safeguard functions and necessary for:<br />

− reactor trip;<br />

− reactor conta<strong>in</strong>ment isolation;<br />

− emergency core cool<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

− removal of residual heat from the reactor and the reactor build<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

− prevention of accidents or limitation of their radiological consequences.<br />

These functions must be ensured even when postulat<strong>in</strong>g a s<strong>in</strong>gle failure affect<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

system participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the accomplishment of these functions and when postulat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

failure of the ma<strong>in</strong> grid.<br />
