15. Operational Safety<br />

operational states, radiation exposure with<strong>in</strong> the NPP, or due to any planned release of<br />

radioactive material from the NPP, is kept below prescribed limits and <strong>in</strong> accordance with<br />

ALARA pr<strong>in</strong>ciple. The radiation protection function <strong>in</strong> the operat<strong>in</strong>g organization shall<br />

have enough <strong>in</strong>dependence and resources to enforce and advise on radiation protection<br />

regulations, standards, procedures, and safe work<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

All site personnel shall have <strong>in</strong>dividual responsibility for putt<strong>in</strong>g the exposure control<br />

measures specified <strong>in</strong> the radiation protection program <strong>in</strong>to practice. Consequently,<br />

particular emphasis shall be given to tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g all site personnel so that they are fully<br />

aware of both the radiological hazards and of the protective measures made available. All<br />

site personnel who may be occupationally exposed to radiation shall have their exposure<br />

measured, assessed and recorded.<br />

The radiation protection program shall provide for the medical surveillance of members<br />

of site personnel who may be occupationally exposed to radiation to ascerta<strong>in</strong> their<br />

physical fitness, and to give advice <strong>in</strong> cases of accidental overexposure.<br />

The generation of radioactive waste, <strong>in</strong> terms of both activity and volume, shall be kept to<br />

the m<strong>in</strong>imum practicable by appropriate operat<strong>in</strong>g practices. The operat<strong>in</strong>g organization<br />

shall establish and implement a program to manage radioactive waste safely. This<br />

program shall <strong>in</strong>clude collection, segregation, treatment, condition<strong>in</strong>g, on‐site transport,<br />

and storage and dispatch of radioactive wastes.<br />

The operat<strong>in</strong>g organization shall establish and implement procedures for monitor<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g discharges of radioactive effluents and perform a safety analysis for<br />

radioactive discharges which demonstrates that the assessed radiological impact and the<br />

exposure to the general public are kept as low as reasonably achievable.
