2.3. Background Levels<br />

The UK National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB)(Currently, Health Protection<br />

Agency) provides estimates for some of these regional and occupational distributions<br />

[6]. Changes <strong>in</strong> the estimates for the years prior to 1986 and those up to 1994 are due<br />

largely to:<br />

the improvements <strong>in</strong> the monitor<strong>in</strong>g of local radon concentrations,<br />

the more widespread use of computerized tomography <strong>in</strong> diagnostic radiology, and<br />

reduced discharges and radioactive fallout to the environment.<br />

Variations <strong>in</strong> geographical region and occupational group<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the UK can result <strong>in</strong><br />

significant changes from the mean annual background dose burden.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g figures and table show variations due to:<br />

a reduced radioactive fallout with time, Fig. (2.4)<br />

the <strong>in</strong>creased cosmic ray contribution with altitude above mean sea level, Fig. (2.5)<br />

the geographical variation of radon contribution to the total burden, Table (2.3)<br />

the reduced radioactive discharge to the environment <strong>in</strong> a particular region, Fig. (2.6)<br />
