3.2.1. SGTR(Steam Generator Tube Rupture)<br />

1) SGTR overview<br />

If guillot<strong>in</strong>e break of s<strong>in</strong>gle tube occurs, the reactor automatically trips with<strong>in</strong> 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

after break without the operator action. In case of multiple tube failure, the reactor will<br />

trip with<strong>in</strong> the faster time. However, <strong>in</strong> case of smaller break, due to automatic operation<br />

of PLCS (Pressurizer Level Control System), the pressure and level of pressurizer will<br />

stop without cont<strong>in</strong>uous decrease. Therefore, the automatic reactor scram may not occur<br />

and the operator should f<strong>in</strong>d a method to trip the reactor safely and to prevent core<br />

damage us<strong>in</strong>g AOP (Abnormal Operat<strong>in</strong>g Procedure) and EOP (Emergency Operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Procedure).<br />

2) Safety Significance of SGTR<br />

There are two safety functions directly affected by SGTR accident. One is safety function<br />

for RCS Inventory and the other is safety function for Conta<strong>in</strong>ment Isolation. The reason<br />

why the safety function is especially applied to conta<strong>in</strong>ment Isolation is that the<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ment build<strong>in</strong>g is the f<strong>in</strong>al barrier of radioactive material release to the<br />

environment.<br />

The strategic goal to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> RCS <strong>in</strong>ventory and isolate the radioactive materials can be<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed, first by m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g the leakage from the primary system to the secondary<br />

system, second, by isolat<strong>in</strong>g the failed steam generator, and third, by prevent<strong>in</strong>g the
