1.1. OVERVIEW OF THE NSIC<br />

Nuclear power is considered to be an economical and environmentally‐friendly energy<br />

alternative, and its necessity has been acknowledged <strong>in</strong> 31 countries; more than 400<br />

commercial nuclear power plants (Here<strong>in</strong> ‘NPP’) are be<strong>in</strong>g operated, and they provide<br />

around 17% of the world's energy. In <strong>Korea</strong>, 20 NPPs are be<strong>in</strong>g operated, and they<br />

provide more than 40% of the total electricity, and <strong>in</strong> the future, that portion is expected<br />

to <strong>in</strong>crease.<br />

On the other hand, for the general public, nuclear power is considered dangerous, and it is<br />

true that this negative conception is strong. As experienced recently, without the<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g and accommodation of the citizens for NPP waste disposal management<br />

facilities and the site selection process, the nuclear program can no longer cont<strong>in</strong>ue.
