Pain and interrogation inevitably occur together in part because the torturer and the
prisoner each experience them as opposite […] For the torturers, the sheer and simple fact
of human agony is made invisible, and the moral fact of inflicting that agony is made
neutral by the feigned urgency and significance of the question. For the prisoner, the
sheer, simple overwhelming fact of his agony will make neutral and invisible the
significance of any question as well as the significance of the world to which the question
refers. Intense pain is world destroying. (Scarry 29)
En definitiva, para el torturador, el cuerpo torturado –aquel cuerpo que para la víctima es
lo único que existe en la medida en que es la fuente de su padecimiento extremo– no cuenta
como realidad sentida. Para él importa tan sólo la pregunta que formula y la respuesta que espera
recibir. No obstante,
…in his desperate insistence that his question be answered, the torturer luxuriates in the
privilege or absurdity of having the world that the other has ceased to have […] Just as
the words of one have become a weapon, so the words of the other are an expression of
pain, I many cases telling the torturer nothing except how badly the prisoner hurts. The
question, whatever its content, is an action of wounding; the answer, whatever its content,
is a scream. (Scarry 46)
Y si el cuerpo interesa tan sólo en función de la palabra que emite –una palabra que
además significa exclusivamente la legitimación del poder que se ejerce sobre el sujeto que la
profiere– ese cuerpo atormentado, ultrajado, vejado de las formas más inauditas e inaceptables,
pierde su condición de cuerpo humano, sujeto de derechos inalienables, para devenir tan sólo y
una vez más ‘vida desnuda’: la expresión de una materialidad viva sobre la cual el poder puede
ser ejercido a voluntad.
