Pain and interrogation inevitably occur together in part because the torturer and the<br />

prisoner each experience them as opposite […] For the torturers, the sheer and simple fact<br />

of human agony is ma<strong>de</strong> invisible, and the mor<strong>al</strong> fact of inflicting that agony is ma<strong>de</strong><br />

neutr<strong>al</strong> by the feigned urgency and significance of the question. For the prisoner, the<br />

sheer, simple overwhelming fact of his agony will make neutr<strong>al</strong> and invisible the<br />

significance of any question as well as the significance of the world to which the question<br />

refers. Intense pain is world <strong>de</strong>stroying. (Scarry 29)<br />

En <strong>de</strong>finitiva, para el torturador, el cuerpo torturado –aquel cuerpo que para la víctima es<br />

lo único que existe en la medida en que es la fuente <strong>de</strong> su pa<strong>de</strong>cimiento extremo– no cuenta<br />

como re<strong>al</strong>idad sentida. Para él importa tan sólo la pregunta que formula y la respuesta que espera<br />

recibir. No obstante,<br />

…in his <strong>de</strong>sperate insistence that his question be answered, the torturer luxuriates in the<br />

privilege or absurdity of having the world that the other has ceased to have […] Just as<br />

the words of one have become a weapon, so the words of the other are an expression of<br />

pain, I many cases telling the torturer nothing except how badly the prisoner hurts. The<br />

question, whatever its content, is an action of wounding; the answer, whatever its content,<br />

is a scream. (Scarry 46)<br />

Y si el cuerpo interesa tan sólo en función <strong>de</strong> la p<strong>al</strong>abra que emite –una p<strong>al</strong>abra que<br />

a<strong>de</strong>más significa exclusivamente la legitimación <strong>de</strong>l po<strong>de</strong>r que se ejerce sobre el sujeto que la<br />

profiere– ese cuerpo atormentado, ultrajado, vejado <strong>de</strong> las formas más inauditas e inaceptables,<br />

pier<strong>de</strong> su condición <strong>de</strong> cuerpo humano, sujeto <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>rechos in<strong>al</strong>ienables, para <strong>de</strong>venir tan sólo y<br />

una vez más ‘vida <strong>de</strong>snuda’: la expresión <strong>de</strong> una materi<strong>al</strong>idad viva sobre la cu<strong>al</strong> el po<strong>de</strong>r pue<strong>de</strong><br />

ser ejercido a voluntad.<br />
