thought also. It is a commented upon bibliography, reduced to new papers about
the Byzantine state and society, but within which one can find the erudition of old
schools of historiography. The sources are carefully presented and recommended,
focusing on what can be trustful, and on what it must be precautious used.
The paper has a general indices, a list of rulers (Byzantine emperors and
Western emperors, the emperors from Trapezunt and the Latin ones from Constantinople,
archbishops and patriarchs from Constantinople, Persian kings and
Arab caliphs, fatimid caliphs from Northern Africa and Egypt, Seljuk sultans from
Niceea and Iconium, Ottoman emirs and sultans, Bulgarian Hans and tsars, Serbian
kings and tsars) and a long list of abbreviations (that consists in „papers cited more
than once in Notes and in General Bibliography”, in total number of 299, alphabetically
ordered).
The Romanian edition of this history of Byzantine state and society, by
Victor Spinei and Bogdan-Petru Maleon, comes to complete the author’s thoughts,
who wanted the „scholar”, „the general educated reader”, or „the student who
aspires to become one, or other, or both”, to have access to an „updated, detailed,
and complete history” (p.11). The translator, the high-school „C. Negruzzi” teacher
Mihai-Eugen Avădanei, who got up „Charon’s boat” before the paper being
published, had to deal with great difficulties, related to the specific of such a text.
Through a remarkable effort, accomplished by the editors also, there resulted a
work very close to the original. This new work of history of Byzantine Empire
translated into Romanian, a savant work and originally conceived, added a new
support for the literature of access to the life of a civilization of synthesis, which
knew both rise and fall. A support that comes from the powerful school of
American historiography of Byzantium developed through European savant
emigration.
