284 Bernard Dioneaprès le 11 septembre 2001, les bibliothécaires américains ont dû dénoncerl’impact de certaines dispositions juridiques de l’USA Patriot Act, commecontraires à leurs valeurs. (Matz, 2008) De même, les convictions morales,religieuses, politiques, etc. du bibliothécaire peuvent entrer en conflitsavec les valeurs professionnelles. Par exemple, dans des pays à majoritémusulmane comme le Sénégal, des lois interdisent aux bibliothécairesl’acquisition de certains livres comme «Les versets sataniques» de SalmanRushdie ou «Le sexe d’Allah» de Martine Gozlan, violant ainsi le principede la liberté intellectuelle et celui de libre accès à l’information soutenuspourtant par l’IFLA.Pour toutes ces raisons, il est important d’explorer et de décrire lamanière dont ces valeurs sociales (politiques, religieuses, etc.) influencentles valeurs professionnelles des bibliothécaires qui y adhèrent. En outre,identifier les valeurs que les bibliothécaires universitaires sénégalaisconsidèrent comme des valeurs essentielles (core values) à leur identitéen tant que bibliothécaire professionnel permettrait de disposer de basesde comparaison avec d’autres bibliothécaires travaillant dans d’autrescontextes culturels. On pourra à terme tirer des conclusions sur l’universalitéou non de certaines valeurs professionnelles de la bibliothéconomie.Les valeurs sont des buts désirables indépendamment de toute situationcontingente; ce sont ainsi des principes qui guident et qui donnent sensaux vies individus. (Schwartz et Bardi, 2001) Leur étude est donc une baseincontournable pour fonder une éthique: «It is fruitful to explore whatvalues support the ethical principles of individual professional conduct».(Rubin et Froehlich, 1996: 43) Malgré l’importance de l’éthique pour unservice de bibliothèque de qualité, un examen des sites des associationsprofessionnelles de bibliothécaires de la sous région Ouest africainerévèle l’absence d’énoncé des valeurs et de codes d’éthique. Notrerecherche pourrait donc contribuer à impulser la réflexion sur l’éthiqueet les valeurs professionnelles des bibliothécaires en Afrique de l’ouestfrancophone. Enfin, la plupart des études sur les valeurs professionnellesdes bibliothécaires ont été conduite dans des pays du Nord. (Dole et al.,2000; Koehler, 2000, 2003, 2006; Koehler et Pemberton, 2000, etc.) Ànotre connaissance, les études sur le sujet menées en Afrique Subsahariennefrancophone sont plutôt rares ou inexistantes. Notre étude va contribuer àexplorer le sujet et à donner des bases pour des études comparatives aveccelles menées déjà dans les pays occidentaux.
