IntroductionFollowing a long waste of energy, which lasted a decade, on 20 thSeptember 2009, the Digital Library of Romania, DACOROMANICA,name inspired from its French and Spanish models GALLICA andHISPANICA, went live.DACOROMANICA is the only Romanian digital library that isprofessionally organized and freely accessible on the Internet. It is weeklyenriched by new digital contents so that to represent a genuine tool onthe net of the national and international collaboration, as well as a reliablepartner of the European Virtual Library, EUROPEANA.DACOROMANICA is the only digital library in Romania that is ableto answer in real time to the nowadays challenges put forth by the revolutionof knowledge:• the demand for access to the exclusive documents or those whichare difficult to be accessed;• the demand for consulting the integral texts or the importantcollections enriched by the added value of their association withthe image and sound;• the imperative desire to safeguard the national memory by offeringaccess to the works obstructed in various historic periods orforbidden by the censorship, especially after the World War Two.The most constant users of the library DACOROMANICA are inmajority researchers, university professors, schoolteachers, pupils andstudents, self-taught persons and laypersons. The continuous implementationof the digitised contents of DACOROMANICA represents the dialecticbetween demand and offer. DACOROMANICA cannot be, at least in itsincipient phase, only a means of preservation of all the documents that arephysically threatened. However, the unique documents with a precariousconservation always represent a priority.This organisational concept represents a return to the sources. In otherwords, DACOROMANICA is not a library of authors or a construct madeout of the exclusive works of one library. DACOROMANICA is a virtuallibrary thought to represent the cultural identity that is illustrative for theimage of the spiritual Romania in the cyberspace, within this worldwidecommon property of inestimable and everlasting value.
