432 Aurelian Cătălin Popescuspecific tasks regarding preservation and conservation of documents asenforced by Library Law by means of the National Center for DocumentPathology and Restoration. The Center should diversify its activity in twodirections: preventive conservation and curative conservation of documentpatrimony.Research for preventive conservation should focus upon studyingrisk factors for all types of documents and upon drawing up rules andprocedures to neutralize destructive agents. Moreover, solutions shouldbe put forward to implement appropriate measures in the national librarysystem at all levels. The managers of Romania’s National Library shouldalso work out standards for best conditions of document maintenanceand also approve of and recommend necessary monitoring instruments,according to international standards.It is undeniable that the Romanian system of preservation-conservationcould become viable and efficient within the context of real cooperationbetween all involved departments, at different levels, on condition that theEuropean model (a recurrent motif of our contemporary society) shouldbe applied fast and not remain just a “form without content”.
