676 JULIETA Rotaruparidāna is to be inferred in a number of other saṃskāras performed forthe child, as explained by Keśava in his commentary on the sūtra 58.17-18, describing the rite of the name giving, and under KauśS 58.<strong>20</strong>-21,prescribing the first feeding:śive te stām (ŚS 8.2.14) ityādi paridānāni siṃhāvalokananyāyenagodānamadhye uktāni | […] godānavat paridānāni dadāti |nāmakaraṇe niṣkramaṇe annaprāśane ca godānikāni paridānānibhavati | – “With the verses beginning with “Let heaven-andearthbe propitious to thee” (ŚS 8.2.14) the “commendations”[follow] explained in the rite for godāna by means of the maximof the “lion's backward look” (i.e. going forward but lookingbackwards). […] He offers the commendations like in the rite forthe first shaving. The commendations are employed in the rite forgiving the name, in the first stepping out, in the first feeding withsolid food and in the rites of the first shaving.”In all probability the ceremony was very familiar in the Atharvavediccircles, since Kauśika sketches merely the mantras therein employed.Keśava 13 records four offerings of rice-barley and śamī, consecrated withthe aforesaid mantras, presented on the child’s head with these tyāgaformulas: “I commend you to sky and earth”, “I commend you to rice andbarley” 14 , “I commend you to day and night!”, and “I commend you to theseasons!”, respectively.2.1. The paridāna in the Śaunaka traditionA proper description of the four paridānas occurs in the uneditedand “What thou eatest” (ŚS 8.2.18-19). He delivers the child to day and night [with theverse] “Both to day and to night” (ŚS 8.2.<strong>20</strong>).
