The significance of the four commendations... 679following three commendations the first set of mantras employed are ŚS8.2.18-19, ŚS 8.2.<strong>20</strong>, ŚS 8.2.22, respectively. The second and the third setsof mantras are the same as in the first paridāna, and similarly the offeringof rice-barley, śamī leaves, and water. They are likewise offered on thechild's head, while entrusting him to the rice and barley, to day and night,and to the seasons, in that order.2.2. The paridāna in the Paippalāda tradition 17A description of the commendations appears in Umākānta PAṆḌĀ’sPaippalādavivāhādisaṃskārapaddhati (PSPaddh), a manual of domesticritual practices of the Paippalādins that have been compiled from theKarmasamuccaya (GRIFFITHS <strong>20</strong>07:145). The commendation-likeactions are a part of the annaprāśana 18 that in its turn is an extended version17V. BHATTACHARYYA 1968 for an account of the Paippalāda ancillaryliterature, including its ritual works, and GRIFFITHS <strong>20</strong>07 for updated information andannouncement of work in progress.18P. 2<strong>20</strong>-222.
