Conservation of modern library collections.Realities and perspectivesAurelian Cătălin Popescu‟Carol I st ” Central University Library – BucharestBesides macro-economic and micro-economic changes, Romania’sintegration into the European Union has also some effects upon librarianship,calling for alignment to European standards on information access. At thesame time, the enhanced quality of the documents available to users reflectslibraries’ integration into the UE.There are certain European frame programs covering the whole range ofactivities associated to conservation and communication of collections. Themain focus of those programs is upon conservation of library documents.Ensuring the perenniality of documents in Romanian libraries requiresa common effort of all executive and administrative factors involved aslibraries are subordinated to several ministries and local councils.Therefore, a stress should be set upon elaborating a national strategyfor the preservation-conservation of the library document patrimony. Sucha strategy should be based upon the existing laws and it should propose newlegislative provisions aiming at its implementation within all informationand documentary structures.In order to put together a draft strategy project, I have analysed thelegislation in force regarding the document patrimony, i.e. Library Lawno. 334/2002, Law no. 111/1995 concerning Legal deposits of documentsand Law no. 182/2000 concerning safeguarding of the national movablecultural heritage. I have reviewed the legal attributions of the institutions setup according to the above mentioned laws and I have analysed the presentstage of enforcing legislation by structures involved in librarianship. Finally,I have drawn out the necessary steps to be taken in order to create a nationalsystem for the preservation and conservation of heritage documents.
