Conservation of modern library collections... 427Legislation and Institutional FrameAccording to Library Law no. 334/05.31.<strong>20</strong>02, republished in theOfficial Gazette, Part I, no. 132/02.11.<strong>20</strong>05 and updated in <strong>20</strong>06, thenational library system is structured as follows, keeping into account thefunctions and attributions of libraries:a) National Library of Romania;b) Library of the Romanian Academy;c) University libraries;d) Specialized libraries;e) Public libraries;f) School libraries.Each type of library has specific functions which are clearly stated inthe text of Law no. 111/1995, modified by Law no. <strong>20</strong>9/<strong>20</strong>07 (concerningLegal deposits of documents) and republished in the Official Gazette Part I,no. 775/11.07.<strong>20</strong>07. The law provides the list of libraries that are assignedto detect, collect, communicate and conserve the important documentsedited throughout the country in order to include them in the legal depositthat should transmit the document heritage to the next generations.According to Library Law no. 334/05.31.<strong>20</strong>02, republished in theOfficial Gazette, Part I, no. 132/02.11.<strong>20</strong>05, article 12, letter g, theNational Library of Romania has set up the National Center for DocumentPathology and Restoration, which elaborates and issues rules and methodsfor conservation and restoration, regulations for the functioning ofrestoration laboratories in the country and provides expertise, accordingto international and Romanian laws.Another law concerning the document heritage is Law no. 182/<strong>20</strong>00regarding the safeguarding of the national movable cultural heritage,published in Romania’s Official Gazette, Part I, no. 530/27 th of October,<strong>20</strong>00 and amended in <strong>20</strong>06, then republished in Romania’s Official Gazette,Part I, no. 10/01.08.<strong>20</strong>07.Article 3 of Law 182 defines Goods that constitute the nationalmovable cultural heritage, specifying which are the documents associatedto those goods that should be considered in order to create most favourableconservation conditions. The specified documents are the following:a) manuscripts, incunabula, rare and old books and books withbibliophile value;b) documents and printed materials of social interest: archivedocuments, maps and other cartography materials.
