For the Transylvanian refugeesRomania was “our mother” who came to war with the honest thought ofsetting free the brothers subdued by the foreign domination. The “Ardealul”newspaper became in <strong>24</strong> th of January 1918 “România Noua” in which waspublished as an action program a Declaration of political unification ofthe Romanians. Its subscribers led by Onisifor Ghibu, emphasized that“our people, deprived of a political unification, were doomed to an eternalhumiliation and carelessness” and in order to be separated from this pasthe must create a new country who “can gather the whole land inhabited bythem”. Being the first declaration of political unification of all Romanians,it was published as a program of the “România Noua “newspaper. Having asymbolic mark for it was published on <strong>24</strong> th of January, the declaration statedthat the purpose of the warriors for the state unity integration of Romanianswas not the fight for “the annexation to Romania” but for “creating a newRomania of the entire ancestry”. This disposable goal was considered animportant duty of each Bessarabian. The Declaration’s subscribers werenational warriors from Transylvania, Bucovina, Basarabia, Romania,Macedonia and Serbia.As a representative of the Romanians situated in Serbia, AthanasiePopovici-Furnică was a member in the committee of the editorial officeof “România Noua” newspaper, with the subtitle: “An organization ofpropaganda for the political unification of all Romanians”. In this contexthe edited and printed at Chisinau a small brochure in French languagecalled “The Romanians from Serbia”. The brochure was spread at Iaşibetween the representatives of the European countries, who thereforecould be notified about the Romanian realities. On the initiative of Dr.Athanasie Popovici Furnică, in the fall of 1918 a Committee of Romaniansfrom Timoc was formed, which he led along with other members like: I.Niţa, S. Coteţ and I. Bogdan. Among others, the committee gave then onBasarabia’s territory a series of information and opinions. It intensified itsaction during November. Then Furnică showed among others that the unitybetween Romania and Timoc people was not a request from the Kingdom,but the desire of the Romanians from Serbia who wanted an alliance andunderstanding with their brothers. He was already taking into considerationthe possible discussion about the Timoc’s problem at the peace conference.The Romanians’ committee on the right side of Danube gathered on 4 th ofNovember 1918 and decided to bring forward the problems to the politicalfactors of Romania and the representatives of the great powers, relying onthe principles stated by President Wilson 2 .
