678 JULIETA RotaruFollowing the main rite (nāmakaraṇa, annaprāśana, nirṇayana or godāna),the priest/the father performs thus the four commendations: an oblationconsisting of rice-barley, śamī leaves, and this time water is offered on thechild's head, while reciting three sets of verses, ŚS 8.2.14-15, ŚS 2.29.1-2,and ŚS 13.2.59-60. The child is thus entrusted to the sky and earth. In thetṛtīyaṃ || oṃ ahne ca tvā rātraye cobhābhyāṃ pari dadhmasi (em., dadmasi) || arāyebhyojighatsubhya imaṃ me pari rakṣata ||1|| (ŚS 8.2.<strong>20</strong>) pārthivasyeti dvābhyāṃ (ŚS 2.29.1-2) || mā pragāmeti dvābhyāṃ (ŚS 13.1.59-60) || vrīhiyavau śamīpatrāṇi udakaṃ ca hastegṛhītvā || ahorātrābhyāṃ tvā paridadāmi || iti kumārasya mūrdhni dadāti || tataś caturthaṃ ||oṃ śarade ttvā hemaṃtāya vasaṃtāya grīṣmāya pari dadmasi || varṣāṇi tubhyaṃ syonāniyeṣu vardhaṃta oṣadhīḥ ||1|| (ŚS 8.2.22) pārthivasyeti dvābhyāṃ (ŚS 2.29.1-2) || māpragāmeti dvābhyāṃ (ŚS 13.1.59-60) ||2|| vrīhiyavau śamīpatrāṇi (cf. patrikā AthPaddh)udakaṃ ca haste gṛhītvā || ṛtubhyas tvā (AthPaddh, ṛtubhyaṣ ṭū) paridadāmi || iti kumārasya(cf. māṇavakasya AthPaddh) mūrdhni dadāti || iti catvāri paridānāni (em., padānāni)dadāti || – “Then follows the four “commendations”: “Let heaven-and-earth be propitiousto thee, not distressing, conferring fortune; let the sun burn weal unto thee; let the windblow to thy heart; let the heavenly waters, rich in fatness, flow propitious upon thee.Propitious to thee be the herbs; I have caught thee up from the lower unto the upperearth; there let both the Ādityas, sun and moon, defend thee.” (ŚS 8.2.14-15) (WHITNEY)“In the sap of what is earthly, O gods, in the strength of Bhaga's self – length of life tothis man may Agni, Sūrya – splendour may Brihaspati impart. Length of life to him assignyou, O Jātavedas; progeny, O Tvashṭar, do thou bestow on him; abundance of wealth,O Savitar, do thou impel to him; may he live a hundred autumns of thee.” (ŚS 2.29.1-2)(WHITNEY) “Let us not go forth from the road, nor, O Indra, from the sacrifice withsoma; let not the niggards stand between us. What line, accomplisher of the sacrifice,is stretched clear to the gods, that, sacrificed unto, may we attain.” (ŚS 13.2.59-60)(WHITNEY) Taking hold of rice and barley, the śamī leaves, and the water, he offers[them] on the child's head, [saying]: “I commend you to the sky and earth!” Then followsthe second [commendation]: “Propitious to thee be rice and barley, free from balāsa,causing no burning; these drive off the yákṣma; these free from distress. What thou eatest,what thou drinkest, of grain, milk of the ploughing – what should be eaten, what shouldnot be eaten – all food I make for thee poisonless.” (ŚS 8.2.18-19) (WHITNEY) With twostanzas of ŚS 2.29.1-2, and with two of ŚS 13.2.59-60, taking hold of rice and barley, theśamī leaves, and the water, he offers [them] on the child's head, [saying]: “I commendyou to the rice and barley!” Then follows the third [commendation]: “Both to day and tonight, to them both we commit thee. Defend ye this man for me from the arāyas that seekto devour [him].” (ŚS 8.2.<strong>20</strong>) (WHITNEY) With two stanzas of ŚS 2.29.1-2, and with twoof ŚS 13.2.59-60, taking hold of rice and barley, the śamī leaves, and the water, he offers[them] on the child's head, [saying]: “I commend you to the day and night!” Then followsthe fourth [commendations]: “Unto autumn, unto winter, unto spring, unto summer, wecommit thee; [be] the rains pleasant to thee, in which the herbs grow.” (ŚS 8.2.22) Withtwo stanzas of ŚS 2.29.1-2, and with two of ŚS 13.2.59-60, taking hold of rice and barley,the śamī leaves, and the water, he offers [them] on the child's head, [saying]: “I commendyou to the seasons!” Thus he accomplishes the four “commendations”.”
