Romanian schools in the Balkan Peninsula during the <strong>20</strong> th century 793courses were closed, 8 graduates of the Commercial High School fromThessaloniki and 10 graduates of the High School from Grebena, becalmedin Thessaloniki, have passed the baccalaureate exam. It was the last serieswho obtained degrees that they could not use because Greek law did notequalize them. 82Professor Caius Jiga made a report in July 1945, of which we findout that during the bombardments of August 1944 in Thessaloniki: "... allRomanian schools of this city and the great part of teachers’ dwellingswhich were located near the military installations, were destroyed. Whatwas not then destroyed afterwards was devastated by antarts. The fortuneof schools can be considered as lost ... It is known that many local teachersin Thessaloniki and Grebena were arrested by the Greek authorities,suffering even mistreatments. Their situation is very uncertain due totensions between the two parties. Their coming into the country would bea relief ". 83Romanian state, although in a very difficult situation, did not forgetthis moment these apostles of Romanian schools in Greece and sent thesum of 15,472,257 lei for outstanding wages and pensions for the periodSeptember the 1 st , 1944 March the 31 th , 1945 and 18,505,300 for the periodApril the 1 st December the 31 th , 1945. 84After the end of the war, on February 1946, "the Greek Governmentdisposed the closure of the Romanian schools, the immediate taking overof the buildings, furniture and archives, school institutions of Greece andmass expulsions of Romanian teachers’ allegiance". 85 The police authoritieshave closed in a concentration camp all the teachers found in Athens. Thus,Romanian schools and then churches supported with such an effort by theRomanian state and the local communities have been liquidated.In 1948 all Romanian churches were closed by the Greek government.A part of the staff had been employed by the Greek churches. By 1949the staff was paid by the Romanian state. 86 Priests who had Romaniancitizenship were expelled.In 1958 the Romanian state has initiated an action to help RomanianMount Athos monks. Thus, the priest Moisescu paid a visit to Greeceand handed in of the Romanian Orthodox Church, two wagons of food(wheat and maize), and religious objects.
