On the symbolism of the Tibetan book 711/ thabs dang shes rab rjes su ´brel gyur pa´i // nyi zla lta bu´i rten ´brel dgab bya ba // phul bas skye bos zung ´jug thob par shog // ye badzra pradznyā u pa ya a dhva ya āḥ hūṃ svāhā /Although the holy Dharma of Coincidence I completely free from(wrong) views,I offer these (book covers) that cover (the book) and which depend oneach other like Sun and Moon,Like Means and Wisdom depend on each other.May the Living Beings through this attain Coincidence!ye vajra prajñā upāya advaya āḥ hūṃ svāhāThe two book covers that cover (dgab) the book are compared withSun and Moon (nyi-zla), which, on their part, symbolise Means andWisdom (thabs + shes-rab), Male and Female. Means or active practice(thabs; upāya in the mantra) and Wisdom or discriminative awareness(shes-rab; prajñā in the mantra) are the two inseparable (advaya in themantra) determining factors that bring about liberation from suffering. Theinterdependence (rjes-su ´brel) of these two factors is technically calledCoincidence or Union (zung-´jug). This Coincidence or Union has thequality of a dharma (chos), that means the quality of a mental support forreaching a certain purpose, which in this case is liberation from suffering. The dharma of coincidence of Means and Wisdom is, of course, holy (dam[-pa]), this means that it is free from error, free from wrong views (´dzin-pakun-bral). Through offering the book covers, all Living Beings (skye-bo)may attain Coincidence.4. The Straps of the Book. The drawing shows straps with buckles as well as the “garment” of thebook. The ritual text reads as follows:/ spros pa du ma rab tu rgyas gyur kyang // ye shes chen po ro gcig gyur pa ltar // gleg(s) bam dag gi (text: gis) yo byad phul ba yis // ´gro bas ye shes chen po rtogs par shog // oṃ badzra pu sta ka bandha āḥ hūṃ svāhā / /Although the various mental constructions are ever-increasing,They result in the Great Knowledge, all having one and the same taste.
