876 Ana SelejanThere is in this novel a space of harmony and Good too, but this isnot a geographical one, it is the relief of mind, of creativity and ideas.Isolated (jailed) by a discretionary political power (the Ostrogoths andthe Communists), Boetius (philosopher and Roman dignitary, 480-524a.Ch.) and Stefan Diaconu – expert in the quantum physics, reach thesame conclusion in their works: at the human beings’ existence leveland the civilisations’ level, there must be applied the ontology of thecomplementarity, which is ‟less abusive from a dialectic point of view thanthis possible metaphysics of the contradiction”, Stefan Diaconu wrote inhis manuscript during the forced detention in the Romanian plain, the lastphrase written by the brilliant physician being a conclusion in agreementwith quantum physical principles and my prior reflexions and it refersprecisely to this philosophy of complementarity: ‟the complementaryaspects – undulating – corpuscular etc., must be integrated in the essenceof the human being itself, against the general belief which attributes a falseaspect of homogeneous unity”.Thus, Toma Singuran finds the physician ‟standing still over themanuscript” – he too a political prisoner who, ten years after hard jail(Aiud, Gherla, Pitesti), is compelled to become the new tenant with forcedresidence in the primitive hut from the Romanian plain. Being convincedthat he had in front some brilliant discoveries which would revolutionizethinking and the European strategy of the human and social existence, TomaSinguran assumes the duty of guard of the manuscript for the posteriority, hiding from the assiduous seeking of the policeman – his watchful turnkey. But the same conclusion reached the philosopher and dignitary Boetiusfifteen centuries ago, too whose drama is reconstituted in the end of thenovel in an apparently independent story. Jailed by the invading Ostrogothsfrom the Ravenna’s and Padova’s fortified towns, Boetius writes in jail hismost important work, De consolatione philosophiae, in which he sustains asmeans of human and historical evolution the principle of complementarityand unity of Imagination and Reason: ‟Plato and Aristotle are not adversaries(…), they form a harmonious unity (…) and their separation could givebirth to radicalizations which will generate abuses”.In the novel Further than the North, the geopolitical antagonism isreplaced by the fight of ideas because the novel is a Socratic confrontationbetween the humanistic conception and the Christian one and also apleading for complementarity and reconciliation of opposites – ideaswhich give power to the metaphysical novel born out of the dialog MatteoMuriano – Daniil the Anchorite, but especially out of the reflections of thepassionate Venetian humanist who confronted with a living Christianity,
