Romanian schools in the Balkan Peninsula during the <strong>20</strong> th century 7871939-1940 in the 7 Romanian schools of Albania had attended courses362 students, under the guidance of Simancu, Urania Atanas (Corcea),Iovan Poppa (Moscopole), Petre Belba (Lunca), Adam Muşi (Şipsca),Vasile Balamace ( Nicea) and Nuci Condili (Dişniţa). At the school fromGrabova the school teachers had not taught in Romanian language thanuntil December 1939, because the school master Procop Pescazini wastransferred and had been replaced by an Albanian school master. 56During the Second World War the situation of Romanian schools inAlbania worsened. The supplement for teachers was not duly paid, andsome schools were destroyed by bombardment. The report of the priestCotta Balamace issued in November the 7 th , 1941 showed that only schoolsin Corcea, Moscopole and Şipsca operated and were repaired with themoney of the Romanian communities, those in Dişniţa, Nicea, and Grabovaand Lunca did not work, as they were not repaired. 57 In 1944 still operatedthe Romanian school in Corcea with school masters Christache Simancu,Urania Athanas, Vasile Balamace and Vasile Cicani.Throughout the decree law no. 2695 issued on August the 1 st , 1938,the Romanian state established the Romanian Institute of Albania,headquartered in Santa-Quaranta (Zogoj). The great scholar Nicolae Iorgareceived from the Albanian government a land at Santa-Quaranta that gaveto the Romanian state, with the obligation of building an institute there. Itsaim was "... to know the best the past and present life of southern-easternEurope with respect to the civilization and race origins of our people toachieve a close collaboration of researchers in our country and the onesin Balkans, with the same concerns. The Institute is a guarantee of originidentity and of the relations of friendship which unite our nation with theAlbanian one". 58 Besides the institute was created an archaeological mission,researchers of history, philology, ethnography could be undertaken and theycould be published in the Bulletin of the Institute Illyrica. The Institute had been raised throughoutthe efforts made by Professor Dumitru Berciu in Albania. International political events, theassassination of the great scientist, N. Iorga, domestic events determined the abolishmentof the Institute by the Romanian authorities at the end of 1940. Throughout the work
