Leibniz asked Tsar PeterThe Great “to compile dictionaries or at least vocabularies for the manylanguages that are spoken in his empire”. This idea has come to life duringthe reign of Catherine II, who favored the emergence of a comparativeglossary which contained approximately three hundred idioms. (apudPapacostea, 1983: 380-381)Separated from his magistrate Evghenie Vulgaris, who was chasedaway from Ianina and later from Cojani by his rivals from Ghiuma College,for whom “apart from Aristotle’s philosophy, any other philosophy wasconsidered against the church” 7 , Teodor Cavalioti returns in 1850 toMoscopole, where is appointed director of the Academy. He gets marriedand is ordained priest. Soon, he becomes a great archpriest and preacher,receiving missions from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, but alsofrom the authorities and major retailers of Moscopole, to pacify and tamethe tribes which were mostly converted to Islam from the hinterland ofMoscopole, being located in the wider region under the authority of theOhrid Patriarchate. Among Albanians Mahommedans from SouthernAlbania, Cavalioti developed a Christian and civilizing activity: he preached,composed and released a translated version of The New Testament, in aliterary, supra-dialectal Albanian, available to all speakers of this language.(Georg Von Hahn 1854, Albanesische Studien, Jena, I, 296, quoted byPapacostea, op. cit.,380-381)At Moscopole Academy, Teodor Cavalioti taught grammar, poetic,philosophical disciplines, theology, being the soul of this school. Dueto educational needs, he draws up manuals, treatises and other teachingmaterials in Greek, many of them remaining in manuscript form. Of these,we mention: Tratat de logicǎ, Tratat de fizicǎ, Metafizicǎ, 25.5. Of all Teodor Cavalioti’s writings, the most important work remainsΠρωτοπειρία (Protopiria “First teaching”), printed not in Moscopole, as itcould be expected, but in Venice, in 1770.Its full title, translated from Greek, is: The first teaching drawn up bythe highly lettered and very pious teacher, preacher and archbishop KirTeodor Anastas Cavalioti from Moscopole, and now for the first time tolight with the effort of highly venerable and highly beneficial Kir GheorgheTricupa, known as Cosmischi, from Moscopole, Venice 1770.
