Desafios para a superação das desigualdades sociaisespecially in regard to school life within the classrooms – as studies in this field specificallyare still rare.In order to accommodate the various topics to be presented, the central theme of theConference was divided into thematic sessions, the diversity of which represents the richnessand complexity of the topics in discussion. The sessions lasted two days and saw thepresentation of different papers, which were attended and discussed by research groups, including both undergraduate and post-graduation students. The presence of participants from different states and countries – including the authorsof this volume – demonstrates the possibility and opportunity to create and strengthenacademic bonds between institutions in Brazil and other countries in Latin America, Europeand North America, with a focus on textbooks and educational media. The BrazilianConference thereby achieved one of the IARTEM goals, by increasing the visibility of theassociation in Latin America. This volume, available at both the IARTEM website (www.iartem.no) and theNPPD/UFPR website (www.nppd.ufpr.br), includes most of the papers presented in thethematic sessions. It is comprised of texts in Portuguese, Spanish, Galician and English, withthe purpose of ensuring international participation and the exchange of teaching and researchexperiences. Every text is followed by the respective abstract and the authors’ e-mailaddresses, to provide contact opportunities for people interested in the different themes. The event was held at the Universidade Federal do Paraná, in Curitiba, and countedmore than one hundred participants. The Conference gave the participants the opportunity tocome together in a productive academic environment, enabling the construction of new andstrong ties as both colleagues and friends, and strengthening the commitment to overcomesocial inequality and confront the processes of social exclusion. For many participants, textbooks and educational media can be instruments of social change, used to build a morejust society. As organizers of this volume, we hope that the readers will encounter ideas here thatwill animate new debates, and that they will be encouraged to get acquainted with theInternational Association for Research on Textbooks and Educational Media (IARTEM), andparticipate in the community and the activities developed by it.Curitiba, September 2013Tânia Maria Figueiredo Braga GarciaDeise Cristina de Lima PicançoLeilah Santiago BufremJesus Rodríguez RodríguezSusanne V.
