521 A "brother or sister" is here interpreted to mean a uterine brother or sister, i.e., a brother or sister by the same mother<br />

but not by the same father, as the case of full brothers and sisters or brothers and sisters by the same father but<br />

different mothers is understood to be dealt with later, in the last verse of this Sura. The uterine brother or sister, if only<br />

one survives, takes a sixth; if more than one survive, they take a third collectively, and divide among themselves; this<br />

on the supposition that there are no descendants or ascendants, however remote. There may, however, be a widow<br />

or widower surviving: she or he takes her or his share, as already specified. The shares of collaterals generally are<br />

calculated on a complicated system which cannot be described in a brief note. For these, and the rules about<br />

Residuaries ('Asaba) reference should be made to special legal treatises. (4.12)<br />

4:19 -O ye who believe! ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat<br />

them with harshness that ye may take away part of the dower ye have given them except<br />

where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of<br />

kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing and Allah<br />

brings about through it a great deal of good. 527528<br />
