Flottenkommando Fakten und Zahlen 2009
Fishery is a traditional part of economy and culture in coastal countries. Here, employment is
often concentrated in the coastal regions. Furthermore, fishing is an important tourist attraction
and thus contributes to the economic power of coastal regions.
At the end of 2008, the fishing fleet comprised 1,827 fishing vessels. Of these, only 9
(including 6 universal high sea trawlers) could be allocated to high-sea fishing. The core of the
German fishing fleet is made up of the cutter and coastal fishery, encompassing a total of 391
vessels. With few exceptions, coastal fishing is only carried out at the Baltic coast. Here, 1,362
boats are employed close to shore in gillnet and weir fishing. Another 63 vessels are used for
mussel fishing and/or fishing without quota regulation.
Taking into account the internationally agreed catch quotas, German fishing vessels
operating in cutter and high-sea fishing caught well over 246,992 tons of fish in 2008, 72%
(177,951 tons) thereof abroad. This generated proceeds of 216.5 million EUR. Statistically, the
average German consumer eats about 16 kg of fish per year.
The number of employees cannot be fully determined as the registration procedure for
companies was changed on 1 January 2007. Since 2007 only the employees of enterprises with
more than 20 persons are registered. On the cut-off date of 31 December 2008, 8,039 persons
were employed in the German fishing industry.
1.6.10 Miscellaneous
For the rescue service at sea, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service uses 61
vehicles. In addition, 60 employees in the Bremen-based control center, 186 permanently
employed and 800 voluntary sea rescuers are available. The German Maritime Search and Rescue
Service is supported by SAR helicopters from the German Navy. In 2008, 127 persons were
rescued from distress at sea, 978 persons were rescued from life-threatening danger and 68
vessels were saved from total loss.
847 sea and harbour pilots as well as 160 tugs provide their services in the German waters
and sea ports. In cooperation with the relevant institutions of the Federal Water and Navigation
Administration they significantly contribute to safety on German shipping routes and preventive
environmental and marine protection.
