As the dyspnoea increases, the complexion becomespallid and finally livid, and the face bloats. The pujse increasefrequency and becomes smaller. The little ones seem to suffer morpain than they really do ; the children grasp at their throats anpull at their tongues, not so much because they suffer acute painas because they are so terribly distressed for breath ; at any ratouching the larynx does not seem to cause an increase of sufferiThe cough and the agony of breathing do not last all the time ;between the paroxysms, the patients lie in a state of sopor andutter exhaustion. True intermissions during which the diseaseseems on the point of leaving and the patients appear cheerful anin apparent health, occur very rarely. Intermissions or remissiongenerally take place in the morning ; they seldom last all day, astill less frequently a day and a night, but are interrupted by rnewed attacks of cough and dyspnoea. If at this stage of the disease the pathological disease should ta favorable turn, the improvement may announce itself quite suddenly by the expectoration, within a short period of time, of larquantities of membranous patches or even of the whole of thecylindrical tube at once. This last-mentioned change occurs veryrarely, and even if it does occur, it is not safe to regard the das entirely over until at least two days have elapsed without anytrace of a renewed exudation having been perceived. In other caserecovery takes place by the gradual absorption and liquefaction othe membrane, the cough becomes moister, a mucous rfile is heardin the larynx and trachea, small pieces of membrane and a yellowish tenacious mucus are coughed up, the signs of congestion in thhead and face decrease, the pulse rises and the breathing becomeseasier. Several days may pass while these changes are going on,before all danger is past; this point remains more particularlydoubtful if the children do not bring up any thing and swallow thdetached mucus or membranous patches. If the disease runs an unfavorable course, every symptom steadilyand uniformly increases in intensity, or the increase takes placefits and starts, with remissions such as we have described. Theface now exhibits the pallor of death, the eyes gradually lose thlustre and assume a vague and unmeaning expression. The coughnow loses all resonance, the very power to force out a singleLaryngotracheitis Crouposa. 117turn of cough seems to be lost. At times the membranes in thetrachea are heard to flutter, and their expulsion is momentarilyexpected. The dyspnoea now reaches its climax, the children arealmost driven to frenzy during the paroxysms of cough or the respiration becomes so restricted and superficial that the dyspnoeaapparently does not seem to be as violent as it is in reality.
