This kind of catarrh is verycommon among persons who use their organs of speech a good deal.We beg the reader to contrast Manganum with Selenium which ismuch praised for these symptoms.Mezereum is recommended if the disease has a syphilitic originand the symptoms point to ulceration of the larynx ; among thesesymptoms the livid color of the pharynx and the ulcerated folliclon the posterior wall of this organ ai'e prominent.Phosphorus has been found reliable in the most desperate cases oflaryngotracheal catarrh. A tubercular origin of the affection isindeed a chief indication for Phosphorus, but this remedy likewiscures other forms of catarrh, more especially the chronic hoarsenof preachers or singers. The more important symptoms are : weakness and sensitiveness of the organs of speech, with sensation ofness, burning, roughness, soreness in the larynx and trachea, morespecially after using the voice more than usual ; hoarseness, evnia, particularly under the operation ot exciting emotions ; conswheezing inspirations ; cough excited by the violent tickling andburning in the larynx, painful, with rattling of mucus,* althoughscanty expectoration ; hoarse, dry-sounding cough ; sensation, whcoughing, as if a lump of flesh would detach itself from the throfirm, yellowish expectoration, mingled with pus or streaks of bloIf, in addition to these symptoms, we have the general phenomenaof a consumptive condition of the system, such as : fever, diarrhemaciation, Phosphorus is indicated so much more decidedly. Experience having confirmed its practical value in chronic laryngeacatarrh, this remedy occupies a deservedly high rank among theremedies for this disease.Sulphur. The cases suited to the therapeutic range of this medicine, affect principally persons somewhat advanced in age, althouthey need not be what might be called old people. As a rule. Sulphur is indicated by the following symptoms : Chronic catarrhs ofother portions of the mucous expanse, more especially of the intetinal canal, with signs of sanguineous obstructions in the abdomeenlargement of the liver, hypochondria ; catarrh arising from abuof Mercury ; sensitiveness to the open air and dampness in particular. Among the single symptoms a prominent characteristic inLaryngotracheitis Chronica. 135dicatioQ is the cough which sets in in the evening shortly heforeand after retiring to bed, and is a dry, titillating, distressingor the cough may break out in the morning, and stop during theday, or change to an ordinary moist cough.
