Vrticaiia*NetUe-rashj Hives.Blotches or wheals may be caused by the direct action <strong>of</strong> irritantupon the skin, such as extreme heat alternating with cold (ladiesat a ball <strong>of</strong>ten expose themselves to such influences), mosquit<strong>of</strong>lea-bites, bed-bug bites, bee-stings, the stings <strong>of</strong> gadwith nettles and other plants; or else by the action <strong>of</strong> irritatinsubstances which, after being introduced into the stomach, reactupon the skin. This, however, is not generally the case, but theUrticaria. 467result <strong>of</strong> peculiar idiosyncrasies, as from strawberries, raspberrcrabs, oysters, etc. Urticaria proper is for the most part dependdpon individual predispositions which it is impossible to accountfor with any certainty; a very common exciting caase is gastriccatarrh from indigestion, and likewise catarrh <strong>of</strong> the female sexuorgans, chronic as well as acute. In acute constitutional diseaseblotches sometimes break out, but they are not <strong>of</strong> any specialsignificance.Urticaria very commonly commences with febrile symptoms sometimes <strong>of</strong> a considerable degree <strong>of</strong> intensity, and which may continduring the whole course <strong>of</strong> the eruption. It is a question, howevewhether the urticaria does not result from the fever instead <strong>of</strong> tfever from the urticaria. Generally the digestion is very much affected, symptoms <strong>of</strong> cerebral hypereemia are less commonly present<strong>The</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> the exanthem is generally immediately precededby great restlessness and an oppressive anxiety. In other cases teruption comes out suddenly after a short feeling <strong>of</strong> indispositiowithout any fever. Amid a burning and violent itching <strong>of</strong> the skina dift'use redness or rather large red spots, without sharp outlimake their appearance, upon which soon after risings or elevationstart up, <strong>of</strong> a white or red color, but more generally with whitetops. <strong>The</strong>ir size varies from a quarter <strong>of</strong> an inch to one inch inlength and breadth; most commonly they are isolated, less frequently they appear in clusters on the same spot. <strong>The</strong> warmth <strong>of</strong>the bed seems to promote their appearance. A single wheal doesnot remain out very long ; it disappears even in a few hours, witout leaving a trace, but other wheals may break out in other placby which means the whole, process may be very much protracted.<strong>The</strong> localities where the exanthem most commonly breaks out, arethe extremities, and the anterior surface <strong>of</strong> the trunk, less frequently the face. <strong>The</strong> urticaria from gastric causes likewise orignates in this manner, except that it scarcely ever lasts longer ttwelve hours; on the other hand, its first appearance is <strong>of</strong>tenhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
