(Edema glottidis during smallpox requires the same remedies that have been suggested for thisdisease in a former chapter.[I once saved a boy's life with Arsenicum. <strong>The</strong> child had neverbeen vaccinated, or rather eight difl:erent attempts had been madto vaccinate him, but every attempt had proved futile. <strong>The</strong> boywas attacked with confluent small-pox. <strong>The</strong> disease was runningas favorable a course as could be expected, when I was sent for oVariola. 541night in a great hurry because the disease had taken a bad turn.I found the boy in an undescribable state <strong>of</strong> apathy and lethargy.<strong>The</strong> pustules had suddenly receded and those that were still outupon the skin, looked black. Involuntary diarrhcEic evacuationstook place every fifteen minutes spreading a most horrid stenchthrough the room. <strong>The</strong> skin was cold and clammy, the pulse filiform and could no longer be counted. I gave him Arsenicum secondcentesimal trituration, one half <strong>of</strong> a grain at a dose, repeatingdose every fifteen minutes. After the third dose the diarrhoeastopped entirely, the skin warmed up, the pulse returned, theremaining pustules resumed a normal appearance, and the diseasewent on its course very favorably.
