Tumors in the uterine cavity are accompanied by a tolerablyprofuse catarrh as a symptomatic appearance. We transcribe from Kafka the following concise description ofacute vaginal catarrh. The mucous lining of the vagina is attackeby an acute catarrhal inflammation, in which sometimes the labiamajora and minora and the entrance to the vajrina, and at othertimes the whole length of- the vagina, are involved. In bad casesthe inflammation may communicate itself to the cervix uteri, tothe internal cavity of the uterus or to the urethra. The mucous membrane is dark-red, swollen and interstitiallydistended ; the papillee are swollen and form numerous prominenceimparting to the mucous lining a granular appearance. The granulations are at times scattered, at other times confluent, at timoccupying isolated portions of the vagina, at other times the vagin its whole extent. The hypersemia induces a sub-mucous oedemawhich narrows the vaginal space. The secretion of mucus is veryscanty at first, or even entirely suppressed ; afterwards it becomore copious, of a yellow or yellowish-green color and opaque. Nounfrequently we find in the course of the inflammation superficianumerous erosions on the external and internal labia and at theentrance of the vagina.A benign acute catarrh of the vagina is most generally occasionedby local injuries affecting directly the mucous lining of the vagBuch as : excessive sexual intercourse, self-abuse, sudden exposuto the action of cold, foreign bodies in the vagina, such as badlfitting pessaries, or corrosive injections, or else the inflammatprocess in the vagina may simply be a continuation of a similarprocess in the uterus. The symptoms of acute vaginal catarrh are an itching in thevagina with which a burning sensation afterwards becomes associated. Walking, the introduction of the finger, of a speculum, asexual intercourse, are exceedingly painful. If the urethra is involved in the infiammation, the patients experience a violent desto urinate ; in such a case urination causes a burning distress ithe urethra. The yellow secretion stains the linen yellow ; if acit inflames and excoriates the parts adjoining the vulva, and ofteprt^ads a pungent and offensive odor.22 Diseases of the Female Sexual Organs. An examination with the speeulam would show whether thesecretion proceeds from the uterine cavity or the vagina ; but thintroduction of the speculum is not only very painful, but oftencauses hemorrhage. An acute vaginal catarrh lasts from eight days to a fortnight, orelse passes into the chronic form. The prognosis is generally favable.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
