Full text <strong>of</strong> "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutics: According to the Principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>Homeopathy</strong>"Page 84 <strong>of</strong> 653fancies, the reading <strong>of</strong> love-stories, slippery conversation, voludreams, etc., are just as frequently the causes <strong>of</strong> painful menstrtion as a libidinous rubbing <strong>of</strong> the parts, amorous dallying, onanetc. All these causes keep up a constant irritation in the uterusthe consequences <strong>of</strong> which are congestion or nervous erethism <strong>of</strong>this organ.Uterine neuralgia between the menstrual periods may be causedby catarrhal metritis, especially after confinement with slow orperfect return <strong>of</strong> the uterus to its normal condition, chronic inftions, displacements and flexions <strong>of</strong> the uterus, protracted lactaexcessive coition as in the case <strong>of</strong> newly married persons or prostitutes.Previous to or during the menstrual period the pains set in eithein a mild form or with much vehemence. In the lormer case thepains are at times tearing, at other times cutting, or drawing, ping, contracting, griping, burning ; they are mostly experiencedthe region above the symphisis pubis, are either fixed or wanderiand are sometimes felt in the uterus, at other times in the vaginor at the entrance <strong>of</strong> the vagina, in the rectum, bladder, and notunfrequently assume the form <strong>of</strong> labor-pains.If the pains set in with a great deal <strong>of</strong> vehemence, they act likecolic ; they are most generally contracting, tearing, griping oring, spread from the umbilical region to the uterus, the vagina,urethra, the anterior surface <strong>of</strong> the thigh, the small <strong>of</strong> the backover the entire hypogastriuni, not unfrequently causing a sensati<strong>of</strong> burning in the parts where the pain is felt. "When the painsreach the acme <strong>of</strong> intensity, females with sensitive temperamentsare not unfrequently attacked with nausea or even bilious vomitintheir features look collapsed and the extremities are cold. In otcases, especially if the patients are <strong>of</strong> a plethoric habit, the cbecome flushed, the temperature <strong>of</strong> the body is increased, the pulis accelerated, the thirst intense, with a longing for acidulateddrinks." If vaginal blennorrhoea is present, these phenomena frequently denote a condition like catarrhal metritis which not unfrquently becomes aggravated before or during the menstrual flow.In case <strong>of</strong> chronic engorgements or displacements <strong>of</strong> the uteruspains are not always present, but the neuralgic affection manifesVarious Morbid Conditions in the Sexual System. 91itself in the form <strong>of</strong> disagreeable sensations such as weakness, lguor and pressing towards the small <strong>of</strong> the back or thighs, patulocondition <strong>of</strong> the vulva with sensation as if the pelvic viscera wopress out. <strong>The</strong>se uncomfortable sensations are sometimes accompanied by frequent but ineffectual urging to stool, frequent desito urinate with scanty emission <strong>of</strong> urine.<strong>The</strong> pains are sometimes so trifling that they are not even noticeby the patients. <strong>The</strong> colicky pains are always very penetratingand distressing, and sometimes last for hours and even days.<strong>The</strong> pains are <strong>of</strong>ten accompanied by other derangements that are<strong>of</strong> sufficient importance not to be overlooked.
