A remedyshould never be chosen exclusively according to the symptoms <strong>of</strong>the paroxysm or the apyrexia. It is evident, however, in view <strong>of</strong>the great similarity <strong>of</strong> the paroxysms, that the appropriate remedwill more . especially be determined by the symptoms during theapyrexia.lligher potencies are undoubtedly sufficient to effect a cure,although a preference is generally accorded to the lower. If aremedy that is evidently homoeopathic to the case, does not cureit is perfectly proper to try a lower atteimation before partingthis drug.570 Epidemic and Endemic Infectious Diseases.If possible the remedy should never be given during the paroxysm, but as soon as possible after the paroxysm is terminated.If, under the operation <strong>of</strong> a medicine, the paroxysms decrease induration and intensity, it should be continued as long as the gooeffects <strong>of</strong> this medicine last ; by pursuing this course we obtainmost reliable information concerning the use <strong>of</strong> special remediesfever and ague.If an epidemic breaks out in a non-malarious district, it will befound that one or two remedies are generally sufELcient to cureevery case.<strong>The</strong> following are the most efficient remedies for simple feverand ague:China or Quinine is undoubtedly the most important remedy forfever and ague, but its value is very much impaired by the factthat it is employed as a sovereign remedy not only for fever andague itself, but likewise for all intermittent diseases. We needdwell any further upon the manner in which this remedy is abused;this fact is too well known to the Pr<strong>of</strong>ession. All we can say isthat China is the most effectual and reliable <strong>of</strong> all antiicines, but that it only helps when it is homoeopathic to the casChina is suitable in a majority <strong>of</strong> all cases <strong>of</strong> endemic and epidefever and ague, even during the whole course <strong>of</strong> the disease, wherin sporadic cases it is generally <strong>of</strong> very little use. China is paularly indicated by the following symptoms : Precursory symptomsconsisting in nervous excitement, anxiousness, headache, nausea,general irritability ; the chill is <strong>of</strong> short duration, very soonwith heat, without thirst which is only experienced at the commencement <strong>of</strong> the hot stage, and is never very intense. Sensitiveness and excessive irritability especially during the chill ; thestage lasts a long while and the perspiration is exceedingly pr<strong>of</strong>During the apyrexia we have: great debility with restlessness, lo<strong>of</strong> appetite with canine hunger, bitter taste and thicklytongue. We do not attach an extreme importance to these indications, for they are <strong>of</strong>ten deceptive. As a rule, it is true that Ccures every case <strong>of</strong> fever and ague originating in malaria ; the cmust be <strong>of</strong> recent origin and attended with nervous irritability agastric-bilious symptoms.
