Full text of "The Science of Therapeutics: According to the Principles of Homeopath...Page 195 of 653[Bflehr has included in the article on chronic bronchial catarrha peculiar form of cough which is often described in pathologicaltreatises as dry bronchial catarrh or Catarrhus bronchialis siccutussis spasmodica or tussis titilans^ spasmodic or titillating coA special chapter has been devoted to this subject in Kafka'sTherapeutics, which we transfer to this work, together with suchremedies as have not been mentioned by Bsehr. We designate, says Kafka, by this appellation a cough that setin in paroxysms during which a titillation or tickling is continufelt in the trachea without any perceptible definite catarrhal aftion of the bronchia. After the paroxysm the respiration, ingenuine cases of such a cough, is again perfectly normal. The appearance of the cough in paroxysms, the absence of adesire to cough and of any perceptible catarrhal process in thebronchia between the paroxysms, stamp this form of cough as aneurosis of the trachea. The primary idiopathic titillating cough is independent of anydisease of tlie mucous membrane of the bronchia ; it is a diseasethe course of which no sort of anatomical changes can be perceivein the mucous membrane of the trachea. In the secondary form of titillating cough we observe an hyperBronchitis Chronica. 225eemia and hypertrophy of the mucous membrane which is readilyseen by inspecting the fauces provided the titillation is locatedthat region. At the same time the mucous membrane is generallydry. The hypertrophy frequently spreads from the pharynx to thelarynx and glottis, in consequence of which dyspnoea and spasm ofthe glottis frequently set in. If the hypertrophy extends to themore delicate bronchial ramifications, their contraction may causasthmatic disturbances in the process of respiration. If the titillation continues for a time, a muco-albuminoid substance, mingled with lumps of gray mucus, the sputum margaritaceum of Laennec^ is secreted and is coughed up without any rhonchus in the bronchia being heard.Utiology. This form of cough is more frequently met withamong children and women than among men. Primarily it ismost commonly occasioned by irritants that affect directly theperipheral nerves of the bronchial mucous membrane. Theinhalation of cold or damp air, an intense cold, a sudden changeof temperature, cold winds, a draught of air, acrid gases or vaposmoke, dust, very cold beverages such as ice- water, too long orloud talking, especially during a walk or run ; crying, screamingsinging, shouting, loud reading, especially if mixed up with a godeal of talking; exertions of the windpipe by the use of windinstruments, whistling, by the blow-pipe, dancing, springing, etccontribute greatly to the development of this form of cough. Itis likewise excited by fits of passion, chagrin, loud quarrellingsudden fright or surprise, etc. Sympathetically, this cough mayattack hypochondriacs, hysteric women, children during the periodof dentition, girls during the menstrual flow.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
