Every case of poisoning by the bof a serpent shows that this class of poisons exerts a specific aupon the heart. We have an unusual increase of the frequency ofthe pulse which becomes feeble and small, or intermittent ; there868 Diseases of the Heart.pain in the region of the heart, the pain being sometimes intensepalpitations of the heart, fearful anguish, bloody expectorationwith constant hacking cough, marked symptoms of cyanosis, icycoldness of the extremities, with cold perspiration, retention ofurine ; paralytic sensation in the whole left side of the body, oviolent pain in the left shoulder and left arm, etc Postexaminations have always shown the heart more or less affected. The endocardium in the region of the valves is infiltrated and eaily torn ; ecchymoses cover its internal and external surface ; edations in the muscular tissue of the heart. According to thesesymptoms, Lachesis must prove a good remedy in very acute casesof endocarditis, not in j)ericarditis. As a matter of course, ourclinical trials must be instituted with a good preparation, whichought to be readily obtainable, since the poisons of the differenkinds of Viper act equally upon the heart. The fact that the bloois speedily decomposed after the Lachesis trigonocephalus has inflicted its bite, djeserves special consideration. This circumstaindicates Lachesis very pointedly in typhus and acute exanthems.[Bsehr has omitted the mention of Naja tripudians as a remedy forheart-disease. We are indebted to Dr. Russell, of England, for aproving of this snake-poison. Dr. Hughes, in his late Manual ofPharmacQ-dynamics, confirms the therapeutic value of this agentin diseases of the heart. "To quiet," says he, "chronic nervouspalpitation, to aid in the restoration of a heart recently damageby inflammation, and to assuage the sufterings of chronic hypertrophy and valvular disease, it was ranked by Dr. Russell as thechief remedy: and I think I can confirm his estimate." II.]Sulphur is not classed by us among the cardiac remedies, althoughits pathogenesis contains a number of symptoms referring to theheart ; nevertheless, we consider it valuable for reasons that wehave already stated when treating of inflammatory processes informer chapters. No remedy is better able than Sulphur to effectthe reabsorption of an exudation that had already existed for atime, and in our opinion this proposition applies to all inflammatory processes. In a case of pericarditis, where uncommonly loudfriction-murmurs and a rubbing of the pericardial surfaces againseach other, that could even be felt by the hand, had already exisfor upwards of three months, these symptoms disappeared entirelyafter Sulphur had been given for a fortnight. We only recommendSulphur for pericarditis, especially the plastic form of the diseafter the inflammatory stage proper has run its course.
