This terminationpneumonia is generally characterized by a sinking of the tempera^ture with an increased frequency of the pulse, great anxiety andrestlessness with copious, cool perspiration, cerebral congestionwith a livid or at least a strikingly pallid complexion. In contrdistinction to Phosphorus, the indications for Tartar emetic pointo a deficient reaction ; hence it is more suitable for old peoplfor vigorous and young persons. We doubt whether this remedywill ever be found appropriate in the stage of purulent dissolutiAmong the complications it is particularly bronchitis that pointsto Tartar emetic. Here we meet most commonly with the abovedescribed condition, an excessive crowding of the bronchia, withinsufficient ability to remove the secretion. It is this speciespneumonia, which is so apt to set in in an epidemic form, that hagiven rise to the commendations with which Tartar emetic hasbeen honored as a remedy for pneumonia with unquestionable propriety ; for in this kind of pneumonia the remedy displays extraordinary curative powers. It deserves particular attention in themore dangerous forms of bronchitis in the case of children, in pnmonia as a complication of whooping-cough, in pneumonia whensupervening during the presence of emphysema. Not only by bronchitis, but likewise by an intense catarrh of the stomach is Tartemetic indicated in pneumonia, and in this respect it may be properly given after Bryonia. We should never lose sight of the factthat when a large quantity of mucus accumulates in the lungs, theexjiectoration is difficult, but that, when it does take place, grelief is afforded. Regarding the dose, physicians agree most remarkably in the case of this remedy ; so far as we know, a highertrituration than the third is not advised by any physician. Thesecond trituration in grain-doses is probably the most appropriatsince it never gives rise to nausea.Hepar sulphuris calcareum. We are amazed that this remedy is solittle or rather not at all mentioned in the therapeutics of pneumonia ; we w^ould urge physicians to try Hepar in this disease. Imaking this request we are supported by several really brilliantcures, one of which we will relate very briefly. A boy of six yeaPneumonia. 281who had enjoyed good health up to that time and was otherwiseof a robust constitution, had been treated for pneumonia by anallopathic physician for upwards of eight weeks, without recovering; he was allowed to languish in a diseased condition until arapidly increasing curvature of the thorax set it. Twenty weeksafter the first commencement of the pneumonia, the parents soughtour advice. The child was exceedingly emaciated, had a slighthectic fever, was constantly troubled by a sometimes spasmodiccough, with a purulent and fetid expectoration, diarrhoea, loss oappetite. The right side of the thorax had caved in quite consideably, the left was abnormally bulging ; on the right side the percussion-sound was perfectly empty, with intense bronchial respiration and slight r&les. We diagnosed pleuro-pneumonia of the rightside, with absorption of the pleuritic exudation, but continued psence of the pneumonic infiltration in a state of purulent dissolhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
