Death results mostlyfrom alterations in the organs of the circulation, very seldom fra gradual prostration of strength. Recovery being generally imperfect, the prognosis is only conditionally favorable.Treatments It has to be directed against the single paroxysm,in which case it is necessarily symptomatic ; and likewise againsthe chronic disease, in which case it aims at removing the cause. The treatment of the single paroxysm leads us to the remediesthat have been indicated for rheumatism ; this is a necessary consequence of the pathological vagueness of both affections and ofinsufficiency of our physiological provings. Many remedies arerecommended for gout, the value of which is very questionable; inrecommending them, their authors probably overlooked the factthat an attack of gout sometimes terminates spontaneously in oneweek. At the same time we are bound to admit that we are notacquainted with any complete cures of gout under homoeopathictreatment. In selecting a remedy, a characteristic phenomenon ofthe gout, namely the deposition of urates in the urine, must notlost sight of. Unfortunately the sediments in the urine have notbeen tested chemically by our provers. For the single paroxysm which is accompanied by violent fever.Aconite renders the most eminent service, but it has to be givenlarge and frequently repeated doses. Arnica has often done goodservice, if the attack had been caused by mechanical injuries, orit sets in after great physical exertions ; if the inflamed jointintensely red, and the patients were very restless in spite of thpains. Arnica is likewise excellent in cases of metastasis to thebrain. According to Hartmann, Pulsatilla is indicated by the fol644 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.lowing symptoms : The pains abate in cool air ; the local affectishifts its locality very rapidly ; the affection of the knee is cterized by shooting, drawing-stitching pains. Such symptoms mayscarcely ever occur in reality, SaJbina is, like Pulsatilla, indiif the affection inclines to rapidly change its locality, but morticularly if the change takes place from the big toe-joint to theand vice versa ; the pains are alleviated in the cool air, and thpatient is constantly obliged to change the position of the affecpart. We have observed all these symptoms in the case of a girlwho had swallowed a quantity of Sabina for the purpose of producing a miscarriage ; these symptoms convey an exact image ofan attack of gout. Staphysagria^ if the paroxysms of gout of thetarsal joint gradually assume the form of anomalous gout. Nuzvomica is evidently recommended on account of the exciting causehttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
