More recently we have become enabled to increase ordiminish this pressure ad libitum to suit the condition of ourpatients ; both the decrease as well as the increase of this presexert a wonderful effect upon emphysematous individuals. Adiminished pressure of the atmosphere is procured by causing ourpatients to reside on high mountains. By this change the aftectiois improved in an uncommon degree, almost without an exceptionand in a very short time, the catarrh becomes less and the patienvery soon gains in flesh. Any one who has resided on high mountains, must have experienced the great ease with which the act ofrespiration is performed, and what a pleasantly stimulating eftecmountain-forests have upon the organism. Not only must thegreater ease in breathing feel very pleasant to the patient, butquality of the inhaled air must likewise aftbrd a pleasant stimultion to his weary frame. Be this as it may, the best thing emphysematous individuals can do for themselves in the summer, is tolive on high mountains. How it happens that an increase of atmospheric pressure likewiseexerts a beneficent effect upon emphysematous individuals, we areunable to decide, nor do we deem it essential to entangle ourselvin hypothetical speculations on this subject. That this effect isproduced, is not only corroborated by experience, but likewise bythe apparatuses contrived for the inhalation of compressed air.But few of such apparatuses are as yet in use, but we feel confi.dent that in every large city an apparatus of this kind will soonor later be introduced, and we deem it so much more our duty todirect the attention of our Colleagues to artificial contrivancesthis kind, as our Materia Medica is utterly destitute of remedialagents for this disease, and the most we can do is to palliate thpatient's distress. More detailed information concerning this subject may be found in the Essays of Dr. Vivenot, Jr., in Vienna, whas published several of them. The essential effect of inhalingPneumonia. 243compressed air for several hours is a decreased frequency of thenumber of respirations and the pulse. The relief obtained byemphysematous individuals must be owing to the circumstancethat the inspirations become fuller and more oxygen is supplied tthe lungs. We trust that all who have an opportunity of testingthis method, or otherwise observing its effects, will take the trof directing their attention to it. ,9.
