By means of this simple proceeding the tubercles are made to disappear in a surprisingly quiperiod of time, and the redness likewise becomes less intense. Thsuccess of this proceeding never fails, and this instance again swhat an excellent effect the external application of a specific redy will sometimes have, whereas the internal use of this samespecific would either have no eflect whatever, or else develop itcurative results in a very tardy manner.Wdf^ Jacob's Ulcer.Lupus is ]>reeminently a disease of the lower classes; it occursmore frequently in some parts of the country than in others, but484 Diseases oi the Skin.attacks individuals indiscriminately any where, without distinctiof sex. Lupus has not yet been known to occur previous to thetenth and after the fortieth year; it is most frequently seen betthe tenth and twentieth years of age. It is said to result fromBcrofulosis and congenital syphilis ; this, however, is problematthe more so since lupus likewise attacks persons of sound healthand vigorous constitutions. It is never infectious. In describing this disease we will distinguish four differentforms, namely : Lupus exedens, hypertrophicus, exfolians and nonexedens.Lupus exedens commences with the formation of a few, rarelyof a number of dark-red or brownish spots, or of dark, smallpapules resembling acne and seated upon a cuticle rendered smoothby infiltration. The spots slowly enlarge in size, the papules neincrease rapidly in number; some even, which are situated in thecentre of the affected spot, disappear, but are immediately replaagain by new ones starting up at the circumference. The epidermison the affected spot continually exfoliates in small scales. Aftethe papules have lasted for an indefinite length of time, and whithe cutaneous hypereamia and infiltration are increasing, the topof the. papules ulcerate and become covered with scurfs which areconstantly growing in size and thickness and hide somewhatfunnel-shaped ulcers that gradually unite in one and destroy theskin over a large extent of surface. The healing of the sore alwacommences in the centre, while the ulcerative process is beingrenewed at the periphery; this constitutes the lupus serpiginosusLupus exedens is chiefly located in the face, but nc^ unfrequentlspreads to the neck and ears^ and may likewise break out on otherparts of the body. If the lupus is situated on the nose, it notxmfrequently happens that the ulceration destroys the integumentscartilages, and even bones. This seems to be a particular form oflupus that sometimes commences on the mucous membrane of thenose. Lupus exedens is the. most frequently occurring form oflupus.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
