Aconite is more tha'^^n^.other medicine recommended at this stage, but we do not altogofhjagree with our Colleagues in the propriety of this course of me^cation. Aconite is indicated in all inflammatory fevers, but notfebrile conditions that evidently owe their origin to toxicationthe blood. For this reason we do not advise Aconite either inmeasles, scarlatina or typhus, still much less in smalldonnawill be found preferable, even after a most careful compariof the symptoms, and ought to be continued until the eruption isfully out. Bryonia will be found much less frequently suitable atthis stage of small-pox. Upon the whole we opine that any medicine is useless either totally or nearly so, for the reason thatfirst stages of small-pox are without any malignant symptoms, eveif delirium should set in. As soon as the exanthem is out, thepatient feels tolerably well; but now is the time to administer sable remedies for the purpose of preventing the purulent metamorphosis which must now be expected, and of which we can neverpositively know how it will result ; and, in general, for the purof maintaining the course of the disease within normal bounds. We have but one remedy that answers this purpose; this remedyis Mercurius. In any circumstances we would advise our Colleaguesnever to repeat the dose too often in this disease. It might be adifficult task to show its usefulness as long as we have not a nuber of comparative observations at our command. If medicine isto be given, it is certain that Mercurius is the most appropriateJust as well as Mercurius will prevent suppuration in cases ofabscesses and small boils, — and we know from abundant experiencethat it will do this, — we may likewise expect a favorable eftectit upon the suppurative process in small-pox, so much more as thesymptomatic similarity between the pathogenesis of Mercury andsmall-pox in this special point extends to the minutest particulaIf suppuration does really set in, we may try Hepar sulphuris forthe purpose of preventing the excessive development of this proceAs long as no anomalies occur, these three remedies will be foundsufficient in every case of small-pox or varioloid, if either theJ540 Acute and Chronic Contagious Diseases.quently severe coujunctivitis, nor the difficulty of swallowing, finally the croupy cough demand any other remedies than the threeabove named ; for these phenomena are simply occasioned by thehttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
