When given during the paroxysm, Arsenic sometimesexerts a magical effect, so that the patients fancy they have recOpiam; although Arsenic does not by any means help in everycase, yet it had better be tried in every case that we are calledapon to treat. During the apyrexia, the remedy had better be818 Diseases <strong>of</strong> the Lungs.adminivStered at long intervals and in the higher attenuations,although the success which Old School practitioners have obtainedwith Fowler's solution justifies the conclusion that massive doseare likewise conducive to a cure. <strong>The</strong> danger is that massive dosemay affect the stomach injuriously. Whether Arsenic possessesspecific antidotal powers against asthma caused by other metalshas not yet been determined.Cuprum is likewise one <strong>of</strong> the substances which, in cases <strong>of</strong> slowpoisoning, develops asthmatic symptoms. However, it has notproved <strong>of</strong> such decisive practical value as Arsenic, for the reasothat it has not the significant indications <strong>of</strong> this agent. In ouropinion. Cuprum is indicated by the following symptoms: <strong>The</strong>remedy is suitable to individuals with nervous, irritable, enfeebconstitutions, who are, moreover, disposed to spasms, whereasArsenic is suitable rather to vigorous and plethoric persons ; oris suitable to children, especially if the paroxysms set in at nior in consequence <strong>of</strong> exerting the respiratory organs, as for instafter a coughing fit ; the paroxysm very speedily reaches the acm<strong>of</strong> its intensity; other muscular bundles are involved in the convulsive attack ; the attack is accompanied by a constant hacking,which aggravates the asthma; the attack terminates by vomiting;pallor <strong>of</strong> the countenance, with cold perspiration. <strong>The</strong> apj'rexianot perfect, but a slight degree <strong>of</strong> dyspnoea remains, or violentoxysms <strong>of</strong> an almost dry cough set in, which likewise end invomiting. <strong>The</strong> action <strong>of</strong> Copper in whooping-cough is evidence <strong>of</strong>its general adaptation to spasmodic affections <strong>of</strong> the lungs. Wehave never known Cuprum to be <strong>of</strong> any use for the paroxysm itself, so that we now limit the use <strong>of</strong> this drug exclusively to thintervals between the paroxysms.As regards Plumbum, it has not yet been sufficiently tried eitherphysiologically or practically to present clear indications for iin asthma. Nevertheless, the affections <strong>of</strong> workers in lead showthat thej' are very commonly affected with a violent asthma. Uponthe whole, it bears great similarity to the copper-asthma, fromwhich it is not so much distinguished by its local as by its genesymptoms.
